DescriptionCharles Daniel “Dan” Harney was born in Castlemaine, Australia in the year 1864 to Henry and Mary Harney née O’Donaghue. At some point, Dan moved with his family to the West Coast where he resided with his mother and siblings at Charleston.

When he was sixteen his mother passed away and was buried at the Catholic Cemetery there. He is then believed to have taken up work at Denniston not long after mining commenced. Dan met the local school teacher Miss Ada Landon Lane around 1887 and married her at St. John’s, Westport the following year. They had their first son on the incline before moving in to Westport where they would remain for sometime at The Esplanade before moving to Fern Tree Farm in Harney Road.

They raised a family of five sons and a daughter in Westport. At the age of seventy years his beloved Ada passed away and was buried at Orowaiti. Not long after the homestead burnt down and Dan had to go to Nelson to live with his son. He was beloved by his Grandchildren however, dementia caused him problems later in life, frequently disappearing and being found after several hour searches.

When he died in 1946 at the age of eighty-two, his body was bought back to Westport where it was laid to rest in an unmarked grave next to his late wife. None of his children stayed in the district with most going to Canterbury and Otago.Map^[1]^[2]ContributorThomas Fairweather
