Chris Burles.." The Alhambra was taken over by an Antonio Arcolini after Mr Sloane fell into financial ruin. This was around 1885. The original Alhambra,built on a different site, by Sloane,dates back to 1871. There was also a Belfast Hotel located in Gibbstown owned by a Peter Armstrong in 1885, and an Alpine Hotel in Zalatown owned by Henry Garbett (1885).The Alhambra later became a Temperence Boarding House after their Liquor Licence was revoked."

Linda Worthington.." Ellen Barker married William Williams so she could hold a Hotel Licence to operate the Welcome Inn. As a woman on her own she was unable to do so. She is the Ellen Williams you mention above. It was a business arrangement. William Williams' daughter Mary Ann was the wife of Demetrius Nicholas Mangos (Peter the Greek) and original builder and owner of the Post Office Hotel. Constantine Mangos married Alice Welch from the Welcome Inn Welch family."

Above the Alhambra Hotel on the side of the hill - was the earliest cemetery. Emily Jane Sloane died and buried in the Lyell in early 1870. This earliest cemetery is marked on the early maps of Lyell.

The Alhambra was built on the same site as an earlier building owned by James Kennedy Sloane...he built the first building around 1868/9.....owning the Alhambra broke him, he lost most of his money, his wife died in 1877 and he left the District in 1884/5 for Victoria, Australia. He left all his children in the Lyell. He was a well educated, rather hot tempered man of Northern Ireland Presbyterian values.

Jo-Anne Sunbeam Not the same building, the main featured pic of the Alhambra is a different building, go over the Gables of the roof, you'll see two different styles of roof lines in each pic. Unless of course this one was added too.

Ceol Mhor NZ i am 100% sure it is the same building. James K Sloane built a galvanized wee building or snuggery from the end of 1868 to 1869, remarked upon in the papers in May 1870. He only had the one section. By Feb 1874 he advertised for a maid for the Alhambra Hotel so the larger building was in place. In 1877 he had a fire that damaged the hotel. He was running out of money at this stage and Art Unioned the building to try and sell it. When he finally sold it to Antonio Accolino in 1885, there were problems with licences and he split the building into two by moving it 2 feet. So it was probably changed. It had 12 rooms. In 1886 it became a temperance boarding house and restaurant. By 1896 it was owned by Mr McFarlane and then by 1906 fire it was gone. It is sometimes difficult to date the pictures. Gorries pictures are the only ones with true dates on them

Clare Pierson No idea really Clare. Unless it was named for the ship they may have come to Otago in in 1862. He came from Ballyrush, County Down, Northern Ireland. Then to Heathcote, Victoria and Wattle Creek Goldfield, New South Wales. A ship named the Alhambra plied between NSW and NZ but its only pure supposition.

Clare Pierson an article I have read, states the Hill as been 'Alhambra Hill', now that could have been because of the Hotel and its name. Due to a large quartz mine and its battery in Lyell, often around NZ these battery's/mines had foreign names given to them. Ships people? who knows.
