Mrs Nellie Johnson was a great friend of Granny Ladner and Mrs Sadie Skelton. They would congregate at Granny's place on a Sunday afternoon and play Gin Rummy (a game of cards using two packs.) Aunts Jackie Ladner and Val Maxwell would join them. I and my cuzzies would arrive for afternoon tea time - for a huge slice of Granny's delish cream sponge.
Iris Kenyon
John Rosanowski I think you are related to her through the Blackadder line. Her maiden name was Ellen Blackadder.
Peter Rosanowski
Those really were the "good old days".
Anthony Farrell
I remember visiting Joe at his shop on Broadway in the 1960's with my Dad for TV work and then going to his big old house. I think it was in Shiel St where I met his wife and daughter.
Iris Kenyon
Anthony Farrell Hi Tony I went to OLV School with Maxine. Funny thing we didn’t realise we had a connection through Joe and your dad until Maxine came to Christchurch with Colleen McGrath for the Villa Maria School reunion and we had a conversation about Reefton. Very small world we live in. Also your dad went to Reefton school with my mum Ellen Thomas.
Wendy Thomas
My husband (Richard or Dick as he is known as) always referred to her as “up it Mum”……an old Thomas story there.
Iris Kenyon
Wendy Thomas intrigued you must tell us the story.
Wendy Thomas
Iris Kenyon I will. I’m surprised you don’t know it
Iris Kenyon
Wendy Thomas -must be a Richard, Brian story.
Dave Palmer
I remember Joe Johnston he had a radio shop pretty much next to Snowy Campbell's fish and chip shop.
Wendy Thomas

Joey Johnston lived in the Consolidated Goldfields house at the top end of Shiel St when I was a young fella, it was hard to get in the front door of his house for all the radio`s he had, he even had them up both sides of the stairs with just enough room to walk up the middle.
\Kevin O'Regan
John, was the husband Joe Johnson ? Never heard of him being referred to as "the radio man" . Had a shop close to Homemakers Bevan Welleans !
John Rosanowski
Kevin O'Regan Yes, in my young times he was known as "Joey" Johnson. First he had a radio shop in the building where the Working Men's Club is today, and later down on Broadway as you say. He and Mrs Johnson bought Reefton's grandest mansion, which was the home of the mgr of the Consolidated Goldfields coy. It still stands in all its glory on Shiel St just behind the Wkg Mens Club. ( I used to mow the lawns for Mrs Johnson. Think I got 30 bob for it !!)
Lynne Scott Scott
My Grandmother as well .Remember her playing croquet down by the strand and staying at her house .My brother Barry and I used to have a lot of fun there. Sliding down the stairs
Wendy I think they used to call her upper mum
Iris Kenyon
Lynne Scott Scott hell Lynne how did you two get away with doing that. Must have been when mum J was out playing croquet.
Lynne Scott Scott
Iris Kenyon Down the banisters very funny .
Tony Froome
I Think of Joe often his houses were impossible to walk through as every room was full of radios and TVs back yards full of cars and a satchel in his hand of to fight another case in court RIP uncle Joe
Aimee Watkins
Karen Walsh you know of any reason why this photo would look so familiar to me?
Maxine Helmling
Anthony Farrell and Iris Kenyon I too remember Joe well he visited our home often with his wife Cherry. There was a poem written about dad bringing TV to the Coast and I think it may have been Cherry who wrote it.
Iris Kenyon
Maxine Helmling cherry was Joe’s step grand daughter.
Maxine Helmling
Iris Kenyon oh wow didn't I get that wrong it was a long time ago and I was about 14 - 15.
