yes was a lot of cold tea drunk,,dad always had bottle in his sugar bag,lunch bag

Kevin Lawrie yes ,I used a Gordons Gin bottle 40 oz put 6 spoons of sugar in made a whole pot of tea and topped up with milk. That was wrapped in the ubiquitous Herald, smoko at 930 and tea still almost hot, come crib time and we had stainless tea thermos for our section,scalding hot.just top up the bottle. Awesome.

Kevin Lawrie sugar bag tied at each corner rope long enough to use like duffel bag half hitch around top secured it all smoko inside thermos flash back then could replace thermos core if it broke

Lex Riley Len was on the West Coast from about 1937 through to around October 1939, so the photo will be from around then.

Dad took a bottle of tea out on the farm if he wasnt going to get home for smoko. He put the bottle in an old sock to keep it warmer longer

I was just so impressed with it and was interested in who it was and where.

Les Smith I think that's when it was uploaded to Recollect. It's a great photo isn't it, one of my favourites of Len. I know little about it other than the fact its from his time on the West Coast around Seddonville. His occupation was listed as Gold Miner on his Second World War enlistment form, so its probably a gold mining shaft he is standing in.

I had forgotten about my father taking cold, black tea to work with his “crib”. He worked for the Ministry of Works in the Buller.

Leonie Ward In my younger years (late1950s) I remember a lot of men having a bottle of cold black tea in their lunch bag. The lunch bag was often a "sugar bag" with a piece of rope tied in 2 corners to make the bag into a back pack.

Dad alway took his cold tea and sandwiches to work in his sugarbag converted into a napsack with a piece of rope tied onto a bottom corner and a noose knot around the top. He would always leave some tea in his bottle for us kids to fight over when he got home
