The gang-leader, Burgess, was not directly involved in Dobson's murder. (He was in hiding in Greymouth because the police chief there, William James, knew him from Australia.) Still, it was Burgess who sent Sullivan and Kelly out to lie in wait for the gold-buyer, E B Fox. There is evidence that a Hokitika criminal, "Ned" Jones joined them, and that it was Jones and Sullivan who carried out the murder. There is proof positive that Sullivan, the Informer, was one of the murderers. When he "described" the murder to the Nelson police, he attributed it to Kelly and Sullivan's message-boy Jimmy Murray, who Sullivan thought had been "disposed of" by Burgess - thinking correctly that Murray had confessed that the gang planned to take Fox on his way back to the Arnold. (In fact the police had quietly held Murray in prison after this disclosure.) Months later Murray was charged with Dobson's murder with the Informer Sullivan being the crown's witness. Murray was able to provide a cast-iron alibi through the kitchen staff of the Criterion hotel that he could not have been at the murder scene when Dobson was killed. When the charge was thrown out, Sullivan's evidence was shown to be a total perjury.

28 May, 1916 seems logical based on clothing and the season dressed for. The flowers marking the occasion of 50 years since Dobson's murder nearby.
This is the 1872 monument before it was concreted over and the square columns became round in 1947.
We've been fighting entropy on this thing for yonks:
“The Dobson Memorial alongside the Brunner railway line is one of those which is very much neglected, and at present is in. danger of being overgrown. Either the Government or the local body should move without delay in having the surroundings of the memorial cleared, and the memorial itself left more presentable.”- Hokitika Guardian (1927); Papers Past
