The Burns’ statue is one of only four in NZ (Auckland, Timaru, Dunedin, Hokitika). The full cost in 1922 was estimated at 350 pounds. George Davidson, Chief of the Caledonian Society chaired the fund raising committee. H.A. Thompson (funeral director) was also on the committee and secured the statue from Italy. There was a procession from the Town Hall to Cass Square including the Brass Band and the Pipe Band the day it was unveiled. There were long speeches and a choir followed by a luncheon hosted by the Caledonian Society in St Andrew’s Hall. See the Hokitika Guardian, 5 June 1923, p.4 on Papers Past.

His nephew Phillip married my gg grands on The Philip Laing. PL was a 19th-century sailing ship best known as the second immigrant ship to arrive in Dunedin, New Zealand, on 15 April 1848. Chartered by the New Zealand Company for this voyage the ship was carrying Scottish settlers, under the charge of the Rev. Dr. Thomas Burns. My great grandson marriage was the second one and Otago Provincie married on the ship on the way over.Joshua Kilkelly
