DescriptionPte. John Ludwig Ziegler, Canterbury Battalion, wrote to a friend in Christchurch on 5th April 1915 from Zeitoun Camp, Egypt.
“All is well that ends well, and I always hope for the best. We have received marching orders, and will probably leave here on the seventh. You would laugh if you could see me now. They did not issue any candles to-day, but l have found one in my kit, and am lying with just my head and shoulders in the tent and the writing pad on my kit... I cannot give you any details of life here, because I have lots to write to to-night, as I do not know when I will get another chance. I can only add that I am living as straight as a die, and am ready for whatever fortune cares to send me.”
The former accountant died of wounds aboard H.M.H.S. Sicilia on 18th June 1915. Buried at sea, he is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial. He was the 27 year-old son of Frederica Ziegler, of Shakespeare Street, Greymouth, New Zealand.
