Worked there mid 60s, met my husband there. Married 57 years. Left just before the fire.

Diane Velenski - in the 60's, who was the guy that did odd jobs i.e. cleaned out the fireplaces, etc. around the complex - surname 'Hunt' if I remember correctly?

Diane Velenski dad was boss at Balmoral forest and remember everyone going to help get pub up and running after the fire . believe it had to function within 48 hrs to keep its licence.i would of been 15. At the time.remeber lots of corrugated iron being carted up the hill from culverden .am I right.

Returning home from ChCh to Grey' in the mid-60's - I hit a large rock concealed by snow in the middle of the road - fortunately, it was only a short distance from the Springs - made my way to reception where the owner took care of me and accommodated me for the night - next morning, he towed my car to the sight and made perfect repairs to the damaged steering rods - had me on my way a short time after - true coast generosity! - something never to forget!

IN the 1950s 60s it was commonly referred to a "The Hostel." Presumably it was originally a hostel for workers on the Rahu road.
