I would like to see it start up again, BUT, I think they need to be mindful and not create another Solid Energy, where each miner supported about five or six administration staff.

Remember the coal is still in the ground. It just been miss management of the company's that has left if there. Also the rise of the Green party from the 80s till now. The war drums are beating again. Watch this space.

My father was chairman of a committee that oversaw coalmining on the Coast in the late 50s early 60s. It was a pretty turbulent time then with mines being closed.

Murray Browne Remember well, my ole man talking of the Newcastle (OZ) coal that the Governments of the day would import against our own coal and that was 60's.

Ceol Mhor NZ Yes, I remember my dad having a few battles with some of the politicians of the day. They were dead set on closure and he wanted them kept open.

Verran Robertson they have been trying to reopen it to extract the coal for making solar panels but got turned down a year or so ago.
They are trying again under this govt
