Dead Boot Corner

DescriptionI took this photo in 1998 and it is called Dead Boot Corner. It's situated around the Gouland Downs on the Heaphy Track and is a good example of what footwear some trampers use. Many are completely inappropriate for such a tramp. When we got down to the Lewis Hut we came across a couple of very distressed young women. One had severe blistering on her feet due to inappropriate footwear. All we could do for them was to help carry their gear out.ContributorGeoffrey Bell

My husband took his slippers to wear in the huts at night but I actually walked the heaphy for 3 days in my husbands slippers 30 yrs ago because i got blisters on the first day in new boots and was determined to carry on. Finally got track shoes on my feet on the last day and was none the worse. Was funny in the mud..but i survived ..

Walked into Angelus Hut in the Nelson Lakes one Easter round about 1987-88. The hut was overloaded and the surrounds were packed with people. One guy had a bivy set up made from a single white plastic shopping bag torn from the handles and the two sides to make a tiny tent with the bits of plastic handles tied to tufts of tussock on the four corners. There was just enough room for him to fit his head under while his entire sleeping bag was exposed to the weather. Luckily it didn't rain. On the walk out I passed a guy in a t-shirt shorts and sandals carrying similar plastic shopping bags, one in each hand on the spine of the Robert Ridge. How we don't see more people coming to grief in the out-doors is just beyond me.

That's the mentality of some people today let's walk the Heaphy Track it's easy. Well that's not case I've walked that Track many times back in the day you need to wear proper tramping gear. Don't rely on other people to help you,wear the proper footwear etc.

Had students this weekend carrying multiple adaptors,on the off chance the rock shelter was connected to the grid.Well,we were up at Gridiron rock shelter.

went hunting with a mate he got his father to come too halfway to where we were spending the night he fell into the river by the time we got to where we were going his whole foot blistered it looked like the skin was a loose sock apparently he purchased new boots for the trip the day before he got steelcaps as he would reuse them for work ended up heading back as he was in so much in pain then when he sat down he stuck his hand into a wasp nest and was stung mutiple times what a waste of a long weekend back home the next day he never was invited out again

I'd wear thin firm fitting cotton socks, then good quality thermal socks, and good quality "broken in" tramping boots. As I was walking the thermal socks would move about on the cotton socks resulting in no rubbing on the feet. No blisters.
