After the 1887 Flood my Great Great Grandfather Edmund Wickes who had been the 3rd of Greymouth in 1872 was involved in petitioning Parliament to build a flood wall to protect Greymouth which was finally done in 1990

Think it was 68? at the Self Help store in Mackay St - water started rising up in the deli' cabinets, creating a waterfall over the front - it was coming up thru' the drains - not long after the manholes in the street lifted with the water pressure - it was all downhill after that with the CBD going under water in minutes!
