I read in the book "The Road to The West Coast' of a L C Fell who was one of the principals in the organizing funding for the Otira Tunnel in 1885. Father, maybe ?

Wayne Nicholson My grandfather was Fred Fell but the family was big. He worked for the Railways on the Otira tunnel.
He was one of the party that cut the ribbon at the opening of the tunnel. One of my relatives still has a peice of the ribbon

Jenny Fountain Yes Nana and Sarah (Fell) were sisters. I visited her at her home when Nana used to visit. Who was your father as Dad was brought up in Papatoetoe with the Halseys them being his cousins. I knew Clarrie and Cliff through golf.
