My mum Joan Stuart was interviewed for a fascinating book West of the Divide: More memories of the Midland Line. It's a great insight into life back then and well worth a read. Her section is Pg114 to 127 and it was amazing to read about her travel on these trains and the freight even just to get to school from Rotomanu to Grey. They sure got up to some mischief too.
