DescriptionMr. John A. Lee, Under-Secretary in charge of housing, installed the first tenants in the new State homes at Cobden, Greymouth on Monday, 8 August. The picture shows some of the houses as spectators arrived for the ceremony.

Those State houses had great bones. Our family had one when i was a kid and Mum and Dad eventually bought it. It is still standing but has been modernised a little.

John A Lee. What an outstanding New Zealander. A really entertaing writer too. His book of Shiner Slattery gives a great window into history of the time. For some reason, Lee was expelled from the Labour Party.

Roger O'Regan He was expelled because he insulted Savage who in fact was just a figure head. Savage was ill (terminally) and wouldn't give up the reins. Lee told him to go,and Savage took offence.Lee was the best of them all.Lost an arm in the war and won the DCM. Savage,Webb and Semple were all conscies and hated Lee,who was massively popular with the public.

These are still standing and lived in today. They were built with the best of materials on proper foundations and will last for centuries.
