MOW widened the road from Neil's Beach into the jetty, 1966/67. Carter Holt used to export sawn timber form their Hanah's Clearing sawmill and stockpile it in the Bay when a boat was due. One boat was called 'Tasman Exporter', the other I think was 'New Zealand Exporter' This was why we were widening the road.

There was about 5 cray boats permanently working out of J.B. They lived in baches there. An english gentleman Dan Greeny was the MOW Roadman who road his bike and filled the potholes and looked after the road. His house site is signposted across from the jetty. IN 67 he told me had been there 30 years.

We, the MOW team lived at the camp at the Arawhata Bridge. We had 3 D8s, 1 D7 with tow scraper, 1 Drott 250 [ IH TD 20 with 4 in 1 bucket} 1 Aveling Barford and a Champion grader. during the war all the Italians were rounded up and put in work camps on the coast and worked on the roads,my grand-father was one,never saw his family till the war ended,then my uncle came along,18 years younger than my father.

What team work and determination And fortitude. At least they earned a wage for themselves or for their family. When you drive down there, remember how the road was formed.
