Aerial tramway at Blackball. In the face of challenging terrain and volatile weather, you have to admire the tenacity and ingenuity of engineers on the West Coast, New Zealand. This 4.5km-long aerial tramway was completed in 1893 to transport coal from the mine, across the town and Grey River to the railway line at Ngahere. In May 1905, the cable broke and over thirty trucks hurtled to the ground below. A railway extension made it redundant in 1909.
