DescriptionPhoto 1: Messrs. Ryan and Boyd’s claim where they have tunnelled nearly 300 feet. They hope to reach gold-bearing gravel at 650 feet.

Photo 2:At the small tramway lending to the tunnel entrance at Messrs. Inwood and Ogilvie’s claim. They are working in virgin country.

Scenes at claims near the famous Seddon’s Terrace on the banks of the Hokitika River. Tunnels are being driven into the hillside to a depth of several hundred feet in order to reach the gold-bearing gravel. Work was commenced on the claims in the district several months ago and the majority of prospectors comprise former timber mill employees who hope to earn a livelihood during the present slack period in the timber trade.

My Grandmother lived on Seddon Terrace in Rimu and told us of her being able to hear the miners voices under her house.

Tom Barker yes this is the tunnels up by Woodstock Domain... same photo is on an old info board at the site.

The hut visible on the left was partially tunnelled into the hillside and evidence of that remains. Also the odd bit of old iron remains there from the hut. I'm not sure if it was just the miners smoko/ lunch shelter, or if someone actually lived in it.

Tom Belton was this in the 1930s during the depression? Pretty likely they might live there then, maybe commute back to town on weekends

Tom Barker yep it was during the depression apparently. So relatively recent compared to the early gold rush.
