DescriptionA 'gusher' of water tapped in boring for oil at Kotuku, Westland, N.Z. The gusher shown in the picture is proceeding from a bore put down at Kotuku, near Lake Brunner. Good prospects and oil in small quantities had been obtained in the adjacent properties, and the bore in question was sunk to a depth of 435 feet, when a gush of water prevented further operations. The water is extremely salty, and plays to a height varying from 70 to 100 feet, forming a wonderfully pretty effect.

I think that the one shown in the photo is the one that was in the area we called The Gusher which from memory was further back. I could be wrong.

That would explain the old oil pump in the paddock next to one of our work paddocks on Blair’s road heading towards Kotuku settlement
