When the garage ( opposite the tearooms) was Shell in the 70's there used to be a sign in the window " under no circumstances will I open up after hours", my father got there at 3 minutes after closing time and saw the chap inside but he wouldn't unlock the door, another time in the 70's my father pulled up in a caravan, it was shut of course and ended up getting petrol at about 10pm at Maruia and the old chap had to hand pump 16 gallons into his car, I would have called in there in about 1981 with a see through tank on my bike and got petrol at midnight once, WHO WAS THIS MAN?
