About half past nine the same evening, the coach from Hokitika arrived at the Cass, having been delayed from two or three causes on the way. On the following morning,
we were aroused soon after four o’clock and, having partaken
of a slight breakfast, the passengers by both coaches
started upon their respective journeys at five o’clock.
Crossing the bed of the Cass, the road lies along the right
bank of the River Waimakariri by a deep cutting for
some distance, the stream below being beautifully clear
and deep.
One small wayside inn is passed and we soon begin to
cross the extensive bed of the Waimakariri opposite the
Police Camp at the Bealey township. At this junction,
the river was low so that we had only to ford three or
four wide streams about three or four feet deep, with hard
