DescriptionHere is an old docket from Westland Game Recovery Ltd. This one dates from 1981 and shows that a deer, a tail and a set of sinews was purchased from "J. Glen" (me). Withholding tax has been deducted but I remember back earlier when meat and skins could be sold without withholding tax being deducted. Back then assumed names were very common. If the game buyer wasn't at the depot I would open the chiller and hang up the carcass and leave a note. At some stage a docket such as above and a cheque would be pushed under my door to be discovered when I returned from work or time in the bush/mountains.

Shooting and selling deer was a common way for people to make extra money in the seventies and 80's. Some people made a job of it "meat hunting" full time. I held down a full time forestry job but used to trap and poison possums for their pelts and shoot a few deer to sell on the weekends and holidays. Deer were also shot for the pot and venison was sometimes bartered for beef. The shooting of wild deer to make money is a way of life that has largely passed but there are still plenty of people who hunt deer.ContributorGlenn Johnston

At Deadmans buying site in Murupara I was D Duck and my father in law was M Mouse.
Used to get 10p a pound for body shot or one shilling a pound for neck shot.

Good memories of dropping off deer to Kanierie in the early to mid 70's. Before the organs had to be attached and there were drums (44gal) of vitals and one just grabbed what you needed and tossed it in the carcass. No one was too serious about TB then I think. I got all my tax back because I was still at school. Used to get $6 for the slinky.
