Fashion police alert: Notice that the bowler hat (the "bun" hat) had come to dominate respectable men's fashions. You were not properly dressed without one. (Note the exceptions !) Women through the WWI era wore "The Merry Widow" - a hat heavily adorned with decorations such as bunches of artificial flowers etc. (Named after the popular UK play which introduced it.)

Far out that’s too close to mercury for my liking

I understood (correct or not) that quicksilver was mercury. A deadly poison which can be absorbed through the skin. Oops sorry I just noticed the post above Trevor Taylor.
