DescriptionThe ceremony of reopening the port of Ōkārito , the only harbour in New Zealand controlled and operated by private enterprise, was performed on Tuesday of last week. The reopening has involved the cutting of a new extension channel from the sea to the 6000 acre Ōkārito Lagoon.

Men are shown at work in the channel, which was cut to a width of 30 feet, and expected to be widened to 90 feet by the rush of water. The Ōkārito Harbour will provide a sea outlet for a large area of forest country and farming districts.

My great great grandfather and great grandfather were the first and second harbourmasters.
It was a place of peace for my Dad and his and my grandmother’s ashes are scattered in the lagoon. In view of our history DOC allowed us to place a memorial seat on the shed wharf.
