On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Mrs J. Cowan (mother), Shakespeare Street, Greymouth, New Zealand.
Cowan worked as a engine driver in Greymouth before enlisting for service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during World War One. He embarked with the 30th Reinforcements New Zealand Medical Corps on 13 October 1917 from Wellington, New Zealand for Liverpool, England.

Cowan served for two years and one hundred and forty-one days in Western Europe. Cowan survived the war and was discharged on 18 October 1919. Cowan died on 27 May 1961 in Greymouth.
