Great photo....no wonder now in 2024 the station is in the state that it is in. Probably should have been replaced years ago after this flood.

There were three people rescued from a veranda by a jet boat that day. We were going to stay the night but one of us was asleep on the floor snoring, so I went out onto the roof and waved/yelled at the boat. we stepped off that roof into the jet boat and were put to round further up the town.

No keys! Reminds me of an account told to me by my father. The police in Westport one night decided to raid all the pubs for being open after hours. When they finished with the town they went out to raid "The Pig and Whistle". Meanwhile, annoyed local drinkers raided the empty police station and threw a lot of stuff into the Buller river. I assume the story has some truth, but like many, there may be significant exaggeration.

The building could not be locked up after everybody had left! No keys, Station was always manned. Not manned these days though.

Lol I was Dropped off at the Golden Eagle. Myself and Jane Pritchard. We had come from Christchurch in a taxi. Jane n I were dropped of at the Eagle by boat, our driver at his BnD. What a wk end.

Actually my girlfriend in I were in this situation in Greymouth 1983. So this is 5yrs later. We were picked up at the bridge by a row boat

How much truth in the story that the plans got mixed up and we got the new Hamilton Police Station and vice versa. In the day it definitely was a big Station for Greymouth.
