Richard Seddon was a state socialist.
He lived at a time in the 19th century when New Zealand currency was mainly a combination of British gold, silver and bronze coins as well as Australian gold sovereigns and half-sovereign coins i.e money had tangible value.
Life was very hard for people who had no inherited wealth in the form of land or valuable assets and there was very little support for the unemployed.
For many people the only way to become rich on the West Coast was to literally dig valuable minerals or elements out of the ground or create products of value that could be sold for gold. It was a vastly different world and certainly not the good old days.
And so his quote had some validity at that time when government was very much smaller than it is now..
However modern currency is not backed by gold or silver. Its fiat money and is created by banks expanding the credit supply. Money is worth only what the collective population perceive it to be worth based on what products can be bought with it.
Because it has no physical asset value it is able to be created infinitely by banks without harm provided increased production of goods and services results from that expansion. It doesn't matter how many multi-millionaires there are in the world because that doesn't stop productive people from creating their own wealth.
Its nor about slicing up the pie to distribute the slices more widely. Its about making the pie bigger.
Instead of taking money from rich people and giving it to poor people society needs to educate the population from an early age to understand what money and wealth actually is and to have us all realise that the only way to be free from want and squalor is to be part of an enterprise that values your knowledge and ability to create products or services from your skill and hard work that people are interested in buying and can be sold for a profit.
Taking money from the rich and giving to the poor has never worked out well for the poor in any society in human history.
And its not necessary to do so..

I do not have the greatest time for Richard John Seddon but must acknowledge that in these times of world turmoil with the super-rich pitted against the rest of society these are magnificent sentiments

Words Seddon used to justify taxing the pioneer New Zealanders into oblivion so he could give their holdings to people who voted Liberal.

These are the words written at Shantytown cafe...our foundational law of morals...which our King Dick Seddon of God's Own was much respected of Westland, Waimea and Kumara..He came to Westland to be with his Uncle, he and his family were good upstanding citizens and he of great character. Working in the creek, down through the tracks on horse back, meeting & greeting people.. his wife and family well loved. Relatives of ours lived next door at Kumara, great friends and West Coast can be proud that we once had a Prime Minister with such moral values...ingenuity and hard work with a wife and family much respected, babies buried at Stafford Cemetery Westland and a son served WW1 buried overseas... Well done King Dick, Louisa and all your family = your sentiments are morals which must be heard today due to the overly corporatised conglomerate bureaucratic systems taking wrongly here which are unchecked.
