Do any Coasters know anything that may have led to my late husband, Noel Carpenter being awarded this medal? He only mentioned the award briefly years ago, but no details. I recently found the medal and plan to pass it on to his only grandchild as a memento of his swimming achievements. Noel grew up in Dunollie until moving to Rotorua in the mid sixties. Any information would be greatly received.

Bronze medallion, bronze star, award of merit. We had to learn mouth to mouth resuscitation, CPR, how to tow someone in the water with a sort of sideways kick. How to tread water for a fixed length of time. At the higher 2 grades I think it was fully clothed. Each level had a distance you had to swim. I can't remember what strokes. We also had to learn how to release ourselves from someone grabbing us around the neck because they panicked. Was loads of fun, fitness and good life skills. I did mine in the 70s.

That is a bronze medallion.

Pretty sure that is the Bronze Medalion, next would be the Bronze Star. They were/are? awarded for lifesaving. These would of been gained and awarded after completing the first 2 certificates.

I have one from my early high school years. It was for swimming competence and proficiency at water related life saving skills. The qualification before this was one the Intermediate Star. I went up from Hokitika to Greymouth for the test at the old baths there though I think we had expected the swim test to be an open water one as was often the case. Perhaps the sea was considered too rough or the river was in flood that day so we copped an easy timed distance swim in the pool. (You had to swim a distance in under a certain time - the switch in venue suited me fine as I was a capable distance swimmer but slow in open water though ok at calm water pool swimming)

I think there was a medal called the bar to bronze as well. Maybe it was just the bar.

These were awarded at High School. Once a year examiners would come to the school and test . It was not compulsory. I cannot remember exactly what was required of us but only the best swimmers would pass their testing
