DescriptionWith all the business from a radius of what were almost satellite towns, like Runanga, Brunnerton, Blackball, Te Kinga and the rest, Greymouth was in its way a metropolis. From all around, people came to it some time – now and then even from Hokitika (still officially the capital of Westland) – for business conferences, for sporting fixtures, or for plain
entertainment.

Greymouth’s development as the Coast’s largest town, able to run two daily newspapers, started with the passing of the gold rush. With care taken to nurse the bar, its port was both the best and the most central. It was nearer to the stabilized sources of wealth – the tall timber and the rich coal deposits (Blackball then being the deepest coal mine in the world).
