My Grandfather went on the coach over the pass in 1913, he was 8, I wish I had been able to talk to him about it and know the circumstances of his journey.

I think it is quite amazing that 19th Century stagecoaches were used on the Arthur's Pass - Otira road right up until the opening of the tunnel in 1923. It says something about the true state of the road in those days as well as the perceived safety and reliability of motorized vehicles that horse-drawn coaches remained the preferred option.

It was winter when we moved to Otira in 1978, dead of night when we were travelling over the Pass too, Mum driving our old Comma van, terrifying it was with the hairpin bends and barely any moonlight. I was only 10yrs old but can remember it vividly.
