DescriptionThe staff in the hand of the ‘holy man’ almost certainly is one of four such staffs left in an alpine tarn by WG Grave and party on an exploration into the Dark and Light valleys around 1900. This exploration is well described in the book BEYOND THE SOUTHERN LAKES by Graves daughter.
The staffs were found in mid 1970s by a tramping party retracing a part of Graves expedition. I was part of that party…Pete Lusk
