This was maybe out of necessity or they were well-off, or a combination of not having someone in the family to do this and it was just more cost-effective to employ someone who needed work. It was standard and expected for all women to learn garment making and a variety of other techniques such as crochet, embroidery, knitting and smocking as part of preparation for married/family life. It just occurred to me when I've written about my great grandmother, a Brunner widow, wondering out loud how she got by. I know she took in laundry but seeing this post it suddenly occurred to me she may have sewn for people as well; my nanna was a tailor and seamstress very good at all of those things so i think she must have learned it from her mother. It makes sense.
