Wood chopping was a big thing 70 plus years ago on the Coast. There were large chopping events. I recall going to them at Whatsroa, Rimu, Westport and a number of other places. The axes were kept in axe cases, had polished blades and where that sharp you could shave the hairs off your arm.
I liked watching the jigger board events and the hand sawing
