The Marine Dept were the boiler inspectors. There were two parts of the Marine Deot in my day. 1960s. There 2as the Inspector of Machinery including boilers. Tom(I forget his surname) was the Marine Dept Inspector. Tom was also the examiner for those who required a boiler certificate. The other part of the Marine Deptbwas attached to the Customs Dept. The Collector of Customs was also the Superintendent of Mercantile Marine. Can't remember all our duties but we signed off all seaman who left a ship at the Port of Greymouth. The ships officer would pay off the seaman in front of us and we would issue the seaman with a certificate of discharge normally with three Very Good stamps. Hope this helps a bit.
