The journey from Greymouth to Twelve Mile township (Stillwater area) took about six hours; the work was fearfully hard and always dangerous. Almost every mile of river was marked as the scene of some accident or fatality. The downstream journey was another matter. Up to 40 passengers were taken in place of the cargo.
