DescriptionI’ve identified this photo as Broadway, Reefton. Stevenson's Hotel existed from around the early 1880s established by James Stevenson, until 1909 when it was sold. The last owners were McMahon & Lee who claimed that the business was established in 1876. Other photos said to have been taken in1878 show the hotel was called McGaffin's so maybe they were including this tenure in its history: https://natlib.govt.nz/records/23099639

Around 1882 it had become Stevenson's. In the twin building to the left of the hotel, which was called the 'Exchange Rooms', the business had changed to Scoltock's in the part next to the hotel which you can see in the background to the left; This was Richard James Scoltock who operated an agency which included shares and mining investment. In those days ‘agency’ was a very general term for mercantile product representation, and often insurance, and shipping/travel as well as jobs, rental and estate and cattle sales. Scoltock's business opened around 1884.

McGaffins Hotel originally. Burnt down with most of the block in 1928. Reefton Sports/cycle shop is the location today.
