In the cemetery on Hospital hill is the grave of Charles Greville. Like many names on graves, his name is barely legible and until recently his life had been buried with him. But with a few facts and the website paperspast.natlib.govt.nz, his life in Hokitika has been exhumed. He is my great grandfather. Charlie, as he was called, was the foreman of the newsroom for the West Coast Times. The paper says that he was a most capable tradesman, one of the best, probably in the colony. He was a father of five daughters and married to Emma (nee Ward). He was pleasant, kindly and congenial to all. He was the Noble Grand in the Loyal Hokitika Lodge of Oddfellows, a keen cricketer, and a volunteer for the First Westland Rifles. He died aged 35. To mark his parting, the Lodge called on all members to assemble to follow the remains of their late Brother. The importance of the lodge to all members was that they knew their Brothers, as they called Lodge members, would help their families should they suffer Charlie's fate. What killed Charlie? In short he had developed epilepsy, suffered from an increasing number of seizures,fell during one of them, hit his head and died from pressure on the brain. Such was life in those times.
