Those were the days..now it's incredibly touristy

Wow... it has retreated quite a bit here in the early 70s... in the late 70s it was advancing 6 feet a day... the glaciers are certainly living beings. Despite this I am alarmed how much the glaciers have retreated

Have a stamp in my collection, (like many others will have), depicting the view from the altar of the Anglican Church - the foot of the Franz glacier was clearly visible from that point back in those early days - - -

I'm old enough to remember when the glacier was that close and it was very possible to walk easily to the ice.
