DescriptionThe name "Granity" was given to the town by gold prospectors, in reference to the large quantity of granite in the area.

Long known as a coal-mining town, the population has declined as the industry has waned. The population was 216 in the 2006 Census, a decline of 27 from 2001. Several neighbouring towns, such as Denniston, have become virtually ghost towns.Map^[1]ContributorDavid VanderVeenJim Allen

Yeah well a bit of a downer on Granity unless I am mistaken a fine little settlement in the Buller Bay that has been a major contributor to the economy of New Zealand since Colonisation I had relatives (long gone now including my Father)who came from that district)I always feel a sense of pride when travelling through the town on the way to our family bach at Mokhinui
