DescriptionLiverpool No.1 portal is long gone but an original mine extension high up in the Paparoa,s is still accessible 2025.
The Rewanui, 1, 2, and 3, Liverpool mines operated between 1909 and 1984.
No.2 portal was demolished by a huge landslide in 2024
No.3 portal was sealed after closing in 1984. It had no fatalities during 23 years of operation. '
All three coal mines had only one fatality due to methane ignition over the entire 75 years of operation. PHOTO,S---2025. I knew Bill Closs, he was working in Liverpool during 29 Quake. Everyone got out except two, Bill was one of those who went back in. The two were OK, they were both very deaf and hadn’t realised it was a quake. Instead they were happy with all the coal that had been freed. (Bill said the mine had been ‘on the creep’ for a long time)
