Roy and Ann Hynes

DescriptionOn 6 Feb 2017, before my time on this site, Glenn posted a draft list of deer cullers and asked for any info on them. For whatever reason this post has surfaced again and on it I noted the name of Roy Hynes. I had known Roy, and his wife Ann, for many years so can contribute a smallish amount to the greater story. Roy and Ann lived in the Ahaura railway house (see photo posted by Wayne Garroway on 13 Sept 2014. It just so happens that this was also the first house that lived in. The Hynes were lovely people and both myself and my older sister used to chat to them on the way home from school. Ann was a registered nurse. Roy had one particular habit that always amazed me. No matter what the weather he always wore shorts. He used to come up to the farm where I moved to and kill a sheep. They had two children Phillip and Anthony (Tony?).
I lost track of them after I left home and they ended up in Christchurch. I tracked them down during the early 1990s and visited but Ann was at work (Princess Margaret Hospital from memory). Roy passed on that Ann was not at all well. The next time I was in Christchurch I arranged a visit and they were both home - along with one, or both, of their boys. They were both in high spirits albeit Ann's illness was taking its toll. See attached photo (me in the middle). Roy's nickname was 'Hobs'.
Myra Ann died on 12 Feb 1995. The photo must have been taken not long before this. I think after Ann died Roy moved to live with one of his boys out Kirwee way?? At the age of 74 years 'Hobs' Hynes died on 25 March 2006. Perhaps others can add to this story.ContributorTony Forsyth
