WOW What an amazing photo. I have never seen this despite researching the original settlers at Jackson Bay. If the date of this photo is correct it is a magnificent find as very few photos from that period exist. From my notes they moved from the Government cottage in Jackson Bay to their own 10acre block on the Arawata Flat in 1878. It was block 13 immediately adjacent to the Arawata River on the south side of the Arawata River. They bought the house and land off Charles Robinson, owner of the Royal Hotel in Jackson Bay. It was a four roomed cottage made of sawn timber with an iron roof. It had wall paper throughout and a colonial oven. It also had a garden and was surrounded with fruit trees. The Klempel family paid £30 for it. This house description looks like it fits with the photo.

Must've been huge battle to do anything especially to keep warm, I often think when push buttons on microwave how easy we have it now! Some of my best memories are Camping probably closest to how they lived but really still no where near as hard.

Suzanne Hall yes!! And the drive to Haast with my horse float on is a long one, with 3 sets of hills to wind around, loads of stops for roadworks but I always remind myself not to moan as I remember that Dad & his bros took 3 weeks to drive cattle on horseback from Cascade valley, Haast to Whataroa sale yards to sell their Herefords!!! Tuff buggars they were back then!! Great pic above!

Helen Nolan WOW Good on you! an yes totally get what you are saying, they were super tough alright, My Mum had to catch her horse to get to School in all weather too, she still has a scar on her lip from being kicked by the horse in a thunderstorm, super hard ay.
