The Red Books shop is around 150 years old..one of the few remaining wooden buildings still standing. At some point early in its life it was the Newman's depot and has a walk in safe in back room. It has been a lending library in the 1940s and a bookshop in the 60s and 70s..I would like to fill the gaps in if anyone has more information. The Taxi side of building was the old press office and paper bundling room out back.

Laura Mills Detlaff On the 1909 town map it showed that corner of Werita St and mackay St's was one section. Between 1909 and 1927 it was divided into 3, with the large section on the corner and two narrow sections behind it. The dark lines on the image below is the GDC property boundries overlayed on the 1909 map.

My Grandfather W.A. Clarke (Dick) operated his Accountancy Practice from there not sure from when, My Father R.W. Clarke (Ron) joined him on his return from WW2 and maintained the Practice until, I believe the Mid 70’s.

On one of the history pages there is a photo of some of The Wickes family outside this building when they operated their Insurance Business there which would have been in late 1800’s
