Lovely old building (Tainui Street).

Growing up abd attending St Patricks, I have so many memories of using the side entrance to the convent by the old marist wall, to take a short cut path to Tainui Street. We had our copper work classes there in the convent, we grew veges in the convent gardens, I had music lessons in the adjacent convent music rooms.

Hmm been there for my atheists grandfather fathers funeral circa 1981/2. Post demolition my parents got a piece of limestone pillar which they used as a central piece in their amazing garden at Rutherglen…

Inside both stark and beautiful
I was at St Mary’s when we called to the Convent to press
the hosts for mass by the Nun’s
Walked through the stark corridors to a beautiful sun filled room to press the hosts
by hand on a pressing machine
We were supervised by the Nuns
Thinking back now
That was surreal

Alan Beck Yes, she was Sister Mary Gertrude, born Margaret Joyce, eldest sister of James Joyce. She was a firm but tiny person, and I was lucky to be in her theory of music class on Saturday mornings a very long time ago in 1949. Shortly after that Sr Gertrude moved to Loreto College in Christchurch. When she died the schoolboys asked for and gained permission to carry her to her grave.
My grandmother on the Coast had Flynn ancestors and so did Margaret Joyce. They both had knowledge of a particular Flynn family characteristic, and I like to think they met to discuss this with each other but is unlikely that this can be proved.

Alan Beck Walked past there 4.45 am en route to the 3ZA breakfast session. No need to shave, the Barber looked after that from about 2 Phoenix palms past the church back up the road a bit.

Alan Beck I miss Radio Wai, unfortunately it isn’t broadcasting anymore ? it used to be in the building upstairs opposite the Greymouth Evening Star which is now an Air BnB I believe.
