DescriptionRifleman Samuel Frickleton was one of eleven children from a Scottish family living in Blackball on the West Coast of New Zealand. 26 year old Frickleton was presented the VICTORIA CROSS for his gallantry in the face of enemy during an attack on Messines Belgium in 1917.

Mayor Tony Kokshoorn is holding the carved walking stick which was presented to Samuel Frickleton by the MAORI BATTALION in 1920. Samuel Frickleton was born in 1891 and died in 1971. The photo is at the 100 year memorial service on ANZAC day, Blackball 2015.Map^[1]ContributorTony Kokshoorn

My great Uncle, I have the photo as shown in my lounge and all of the newspapers from the day, passed on from my Mother Chrissie Schaef (Brown) nee Symons. She was the eldest niece. This was when they all lived in Blackball before Dunollie. Met Uncle Sam when he lived in Foxton, dear man. One brother Uncle Tom also returned serviceman who suffered lung problems from the war lived with us for a while then resided in Greymouth before he passed. Have seen the medals in Waiurou before they were stolen, then later recovered. Have a grandson named Sam to keep the name in family.

That presentation would be from the Maori Pioneer Battalion in 1920.
The Infantry Maori Battalion (28th) was formed in 1939.
