Took that trip for several yrs with 2 small children, daughter 2, son 19 mths younger. Last trip they were 6 and 4. Railway to Chch, stay the night with rellies, train to Picton, ferry to Weklington, overnight train to Auckland. 25 hrs travel before reaching my Mum's house. Daughter would be sick, EVERY time at Springfield.

The number of trips I made on that train from Stillwater to Christchurch . The Otira tunnel smell and Canterbury plains is still a favourite memory of those trips whether winter time or summer.

What a marvelous and historic undertaking, when I lived in Blacks Point we sometimes went eeling in the old water race, where it started just over the swing bridge and down stream.
I am now looking forward to viewing the new finished power generating station and water race, re- erected, replacing the original, first public power system in Australasia.
Congratulations to all of the people involved in this venture.
