Amazing feat of engineering,and work from the men ,all by hand,and at night back to a tin hut in freezing conditions ,pre global warming.Tough people,no Union..

Phil Wright Grandad, Gordy Ladner, a little ex-tin miner and WWI soldier, was among them, working on the tunnel, before he left and went to the Denniston coal mine. (Later worked in the gold mines at Waiuta and the Alexander. Until retirement was at the Burke's Creek coal mine outside Reefton.)
