There must have been quite a few of those big D series International trucks imported as several photos have come up. Their biggest engine made 120hp.

You got that right Lynn. Had him driving a Tacon dump truck while I was Fergusons depot manager in Whataroa.. A pleasure to have in the group with us.Good driver but willing to jump out and help others. Fun to be around

While publication at Wallsend hotel one Friday night when there Lou Tuck won a roasted chook in a raffle. Of course many of us young lads wished to assist but Lou no way guys" I'm late and taking it home to Mum" Dave reaches across and grabs it, pulls a drumstick off with ho in guys then goes and gets another.. He told me that in his younger days he would cycle over Arthur's, partake in a race in Christchurch somewhere then cycle back home. True or not I can't answer but dead pan telling us of his escapades

I knew Dave's son Noel through forestry and understand that son "Nobby" became mayor of Invercargill. Dave's father was also a publican on the Coast. Noel told me about his forbears. Both our grandfathers had run pubs on the road between Hokitika and Christchurch in the C19th stage coach days. Alan Pegley has a short profile on Dave in his cycling book, "The Spoken Word" and calls him "a legendary West Coaster".Glenn Johnston
