We are researching the history of 140 Mackay street and the approx 120 years of dentists who have worked in this building. We have the first dentist Richard H Richmond in 1905. if the building next door was built in 1887 does anyone know if our building was the same time and if so what was it before 1905- a house?

July 1902, Grey River Argus:
Mr R H Richmond, the well known dentist, ; has purchased the vacant section in Mackay street, -adjoining, Messrs Geo Cray and Co's, Midland Chambers. ' He intends to erect thereon a modern dental surgpry, the plans for which he has entrusted to Messrs Gillies and Spence, architects, to prepare. So soon as the plans are completed the work of erection will at once be proceeded with. The building when finished will be an ornament to that portion of the town.
December 1902, Greymouth Evening Star:

Mr Richmond the well known dentist notifies in another column that he has removed to his new premises next to Midland Chambers, where patients can rely on the same caro and attention as formerly.

Thanks to everyone that sent info- we learnt some new things. If you’re interested…..
Mr Richmond purchased and built the surgery 1902 ( Maori leasehold land). Has been a dental surgery ever since.
Dentists who have worked or owned the practice through the years are Mr R Richmond, Mr Edmond Reynolds ,Howard Hooper, Croyden de Montalk,London dental( Chch Harris dentists),Ray Kara, Graeme Brown, Ian Hamilton,George Glen,John Burford owned practice but employed new grads- Chris Palmer, Bob Badrick, Sandra Earle,Peter Ferguson, Peter Rumping and Garry Rae ongoing. Many local women and their families have worked here and supported and guided us
Other dentists around town people may remember are John and Ian of course and Ron Taylor, Bob May and John Palmer Forbes( Robin Ross jeweller building).

It certainly does look like a house hope you find all you're looking for Gary and it will be interesting to see what you do find they are identical buildings so I wonder if they were council/fishery/rail houses at one time?

Cecily O'Connell yes Croydon de Montalk was a real gentleman,but Ray Karra that worked for PZ Harris was another story. Memories !! I worked for all Hooper ,de montalk and PZ Harris Ray Karra.
