Whiskey, Deep and Smeaton Creeks

DescriptionWhere exactly are these creeks on the attached Depression Era mining plan? Whiskey, Deep and Smeaton Creeks are in close proximity to each other on the plan and further away is a Rocky Creek not showing in the cropped plan. One tunnel is named as Citirini's. I know this Italian name has mining connections to the greater Kumara area and in behind Cameron's. I suspect the plan is from the Depression Era just prior to WWII.
This plan is part of an incomplete large map that has been donated to the Westland Industrial Heritage Park. The piece I have posted is likely the most diagnostic part. The map was once owned by the late Joe Payn who was raised in Kumara and was well known for his volunteer work in the area post retirement. Laura Mills Detlaff Thanks Laura, I was aware of that Whiskey Creek but no surrounding creeks with the right names or shapes fitted in. See Mike Rodger's post on here for a Whiskey Creek explanation. Re the paper referencing a Citirini, it likely refers to the miner who the tunnel is named for. He got in to a dispute with the Labour Department over a government subsidised prospecting job but I don't know the details.

This area is inland from Camerons. Tansey Creek used to be called Deep Creek, and Fireball Creek used to be called Whiskey creek. You can get to them up the Cape Terrace Road.

Mike Rodgers Cheers Mike it appears this is the case and I have been advised this also by someone else in an offline message along with some supporting info.

The Citirini name mentioned sometimes recorded with an "S" before the first "c" and sometimes with an "e" replacing the first "i" is a name of Swiss Italian origins. Citirini's for more than one generation were gold miners in NZ including around the wider Kumara area.

Late this afternoon I've looked at four different maps of the Cape Terrace area spanning 85+ years. Some creek names have shifted from being a tributary to the main creek e.g. Tansey. Whiskey Creek has been renamed Fireball Creek as Mike Rodgers said and the Deep Creek shown on the plan is a tributary of the modern Tansey Creek. As for Smeaton Creek it appears to be unnamed on the modern maps as well but looks to be a small tributary of Little Fuscia Creek.
