Noted on the back in pencil by someone else who knew names of the men was ‘Mrs Fowler.’ Also noted on the back a price, at some point this piece traded hands for $5 second hand.
This photo was one of the worst I’ve ever seen condition-wise but it seemed a shame not to bring this super-early footy team back to life so I spent a good 10 hours on this retouching and redrawing and had quite remarkable results (I’ll post the original in comments).
Klein is the only one who is kind of an invention because he truly was too far gone for any hope of recovery. The good thing is we have all names for this - bar one - so I’ll be interested to see if anyone can claim an ancestor, although obviously a lot of people moved in and out of Grey during the heady gold-rush decades.
